I suppose that would work; If there happened to be 9 areas of study and they all happened to be of equal importance. Why not curriculum map? Build a spreadsheet or a table listing all the literacy standards (and sub-sections), other axis being date. Then plug in lessonplan (or title) on the column-row intersection. The gaps will be obvious. You can adapt strategies to fill them in. Might be easiest to take last year's plans and see what needs to be changed /added/ deleted to make this year more inline. The simple table can also become a webpage, linked to each lesson. Actually, your teachers should be mapping their lit lessons, since our expertise really is information literacy. My bet is they have been getting a lot of training in that area. Our time is pretty limited to be doing work that could be done better by someone else. Or sit down with your administrator (and teachers), figure out which of the areas are in your field and best taught by you, and focus on them. Then the admin sees your (our) worth and expertise. I've seen too many CL teachers that didn't know about (or didn't point them out) guidewords, encyclopedia indices, See references, or article outlines. And don't get me started on bibliography, notetaking, task definition, resource evaluation, etc.... I would like to know if any of you are using the approach to this problem by focusing on a different literacy skill or area every month. When I was taking my library media classes, one of my teachers shared this idea with the students but I am unable to contact that professor at this time. If you are using this type of teaching approach, would you please share your time line and objectives. Thanks.
