Children's favourite books outside the US

I am planning a display for October on cultural diversity. I should
be interested in finding out some of the favourite children's books
around the world.

If you are not in the US I should be grateful if you would send me a
few titles which are much liked in your country.

For the US, perhaps someone could point me in the right direction for
some of those state favourite awards that I've read about.
