Dear Laura We have written into our policy that once a book has been challenged (following the proper procedure) and the committee has decided that there is no grounds for restriction or withdrawal, that's it. It cannot be challenged again - or, if it is, then we will give the complainant a copy of the previous decision and the reasons. It is also clearly written into our policy that whilst a parent may exercise options about what their own child may read, they cannot determine what other students can read so it is highly unlikely that we would actually pull a book from the shelves. And even though we have only ever had one challenge, it is also in the policy that the book stays in circulation until a decision has been made. I guess it all boils down to innocent until proven guilty, and it prevents the sort of situation that looks like is being orchestrated in your district. My best advice is to have your paperwork in place ..
