Yes, there is a catch of sorts... My daughter entered this year and was excited when she "won" and was advised that her poem would be included in a "coffee table" book of new poetry, which we had the opportunity to buy for a special low price (I forget the exact amount - it was in the $40 range, I think). For a few dollars more they would also include a brief bio about her... AND she was invited to attend a poetry conference in Washington DC at a cost of about $800. It wasn't a bad thing, but she recognized that sure, they published her poem with lots of others in a collection, but did that mean her poem was really good, or did they use the hook of publishing a poem to get you to buy the book? I don't remember if they sent back a copy of her poem with comments/critique - if they did, that could be a useful learning experience for budding authors. In fact, just entering and receiving confirmations (by snail mail) was exciting and motivating for her.
