International School Library Day, this year, is Monday October 28 and the theme is 021.7 Library Matters. In a time of great threat to the librarian's position in a school, particularly in the primary sector, it is an ideal time for us to examine what it is that we do so well to contribute to our students' education. This year, participants in ISLD will be asked to share a service or an activity that they have offered that it a little out of the ordinary but which has had an impact. For instance, at Palmerston I have introduced a Browse and Brunch session at the beginning of each academic year so that teachers may discuss their plans for the term, browse the shelves, select resources and socialise over a buffet lunch. They also receive a Love your Library pack which has all sorts of information about our services, suggestions for read-alouds; bookmark BLMs; personalised bookmarks, freebies I have received over the year -anything at all I can find that is relevant, and of course some goodies including chocolate frogs! By sharing these sorts of ideas, and perhaps adopting one or two, we can continue to enhance the profile of the library and its contribution to curriculum delivery. Growing the Future will also be highlighted as we continue to encourage our students to plant hope and grow peace. As well as planting some more seeds in our special gardens, we will also be starting a register of online projects such as Karen Eini's Friends and Flags http://www.friendsandflags.org) that encourage students from schools around the world to participate in sharing their culture.
