In addition to the SLJ article, there is also an excellent article titled "Using student-generated comic books in the classroom" in the May 2002 issue of _Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy_. The article briefly discusses the history of comic books and graphic novels, but best of all it has wonderful suggestions and directions for a creating unit in which students do research and then construct their own graphic novel. This idea...or something about storyboarding, was mentioned earlier in the month, so if anyone was thinking of doing something like that for TRW, this article is a starting point for people like me who can't draw a straight line with a ruler. Also has possibilities of collaboration with art and subject teachers, and gives rationale for the unit for anyone questioning why classroom time is spent on a frivolous activity like comic books.
