Netters:

This is a follow-up question to my previous post on the advertisement in
the special edition of "Sports Illustrated for Kids (Kids slashed out in
red spray paint lettering to read:) For Teens" (winter 2002-03).

I had some "off-list" responses on my post concerning an "anti" drug ad
which featured four marijuana joints (see original post reprinted below).
One respondent suggested that perhaps teens respond differently to this ad
than an adult would, and asked if someone could do a survey among teens. I
don't work with teens, so I will leave that to someone else, but I do hope
you will post the results! I really didn't think the ad was effective in
deterring teens, but rather, created MORE interest in the joints/drugs.
Hopefully I'm wrong.

Secondly, I was advised by another person that this ad had also appeared in
ANOTHER magazine,GL Girl's Life in the Oct/Nov issue. It may well be in
others.

Thirdly, someone asked me if REMOVING "inappropriate" ads from magazines in
a school library is "censorship." On one hand, while it may be censorship,
we have in place policy guidelines for books, videos, etc. selection and
these materials DO NOT CHANGE from month to month (although a revised
version could); on the other hand, although we may "select" a magazine
subscription based on recommendations, since magazine content (and editors
or their policy) MAY change from month to month, deciding to withdraw a
particular issue or remove an ad that would NOT have been "selected"
according to your library policy ISN'T the same thing as censoring, is it?
Or is it censoring if the magazine has been displayed or begun circulating
but not if it hasn't?

What say you?

Original post:
Netters,

Yesterday I posted a note about the special "Sports Ill. For TEENS" issue.
I aired my concern over the graffiti-style lettering on the cover. I had
several respondents who replied off-list agreeing with my concerns, and one
who asked what I thought of the rest of the magazine. I'm not a "sports
nut" so I hadn't gotten past the Editors' response page in the mag. I
decided to look through the rest.

I couldn't help but notice one particular ad showing a selection of FOUR
MARIJUANA (I presume) "joints." A closer look revealed that this is
supposed to be an anti-drug advertisement. I'm not really sure the "anti"
part of the message is strong enough to overcome the very intriguing
looking joints. See what you think.
