We live in a free society. This freedom demands individual responsibility.
It is a parent's responsibility to make sure their children understand what
they deem acceptable reading material. Furthermore, it is the child's
responsibility to follow the wishes of their parents. If parents can't
trust their children it is their job to correct this situation, not the job
of teachers and librarians. We can not be in the position interpreting
what every parent approves or disapproves of. This is a matter of judgment
that only the parent can decide. It is our responsibility to provide the
widest spectrum of materials for students. I would never get involved in
policing the individual student book selections. This is antithetical to
freedom. This is solely the parents responsibility and should not be
infringed upon by anyone.
