Dear Colleagues, our headmaster has decided to remove the walls between the existing computer lab, check-out and periodicals and the large reading area in our high school library. These areas are partitioned by glass walls and doors anyway. We provide library program for approx. 850 high school students (Grade 5-12), faculty and parent community. Daily,we often have 3 or 4 different groups of students working simultaneously in addition to indivudual students or tutorial language instruction in our media centre. Our (2 library media specialists and an aide)arguments to consider the function of existing spaces and the need for a relatively quiet area for research and study have not been considered. His argument is, "libraries are no longer quiet" and "we do not want a media centre but an information centre" and, "supervision of all monitors will be possible". There is a photocopier in the check-out area and a 3M security system. There are also 10 computers in the reading area. I will be very grateful for your response, based on your experience with open planning in high school libraries. I thank you with all my heart for sharing your opinion.
