Greetings, I have found statistics on number of volumes in public school libraries ranging from 6-20 per student in the LM-Net archives. Is the range the same for independent schools, or has the subject never come up? My school has just formed a fund-raising committee just for the libraries and I was asked to pull some statistics. I had a parent come up to me and tell me that the students should go to the public library to get their fiction books and do additional research. We use AR and it is pretty rural out here. In addition to those facts, our student population comes from 6 different counties. The public libraries are few and far in between. Shouldn't the library have as many up to date and timely fiction as well as classics, not just the curriculum subjects on the shelf? Shouldn't the independent school library be a one stop shop? I have always tried to stretch the budget as far as I can, but I had to use part of my budget for databases this year and I weeded heavily and needed to replace some 50 year old biographies and other non-fiction. The former librarian did not weed because she wanted to shelves to look full. Anyway, if anyone can help with a general rules of thumb about volumes per student or just collection size in general, I would appreciate it.
