Surely there are other stategies for dealing with this situation. Perhaps =
the teacher could check out the child's choice and keep it in the =
classroom in a special spot.=20

I have a fall back replacement book list. They are high use areas of the =
collections where the books fall apart after about a year. I ask the =
parent to replace lost books with a Dorling Kindersley dinosaur book. I =
don't have to cover them or make a new record. They are readily available =
at any bookstore and cost around $16.

Sometimes we just have to accept the loss. I would prefer that a child's =
memory of the library experience is not only a punitive one.
