On 02/22/02, Gloria Curdy asked: What opinion do you wonderfully experienced people have regarding this = request from an English teacher regarding the use of the old masters' = works of art on a website: "Is it okay for us to include famous pieces of art, such as = Mary Cassatt, on our website for students to respond to, with poems and = stories? What are the copyright restrictions regarding classical = paintings?" Here are two reponses I received today: Check many of the museums on the web they should tell you somewhere on = their site the copyrights for the paintings they are showing and what is permissible. ************************************************************ While the old master is certainly in the public domain, the PHOTOGRAPH = of the work is protected by copyright. You aren't actually using the old = master, you are using someone's photograph of it. ************************************************************** Gloria Curdy, Library Program Coordinator Missoula County Public Schools 215 S. 6th St. W.
