Ann- I think you're unlucky! I also think the level has a lot to do with it. I'm sure I'd have a much different attitude if those incidents had occurred in my building. If teachers a responsible for damaging materials, they offer to pay and I accept. If they can't find an item, I write it off. I've only had one teacher (in 15+ years) who helped herself to materials - not just the library's but to teachers' materials. She had a reputation for doing that in three other buldings in our district. This same second grade teacher won $1000 worth of books through a book fair held in the Media Center. The books were a combination of picture books and chapter books appropriate for upper elementary students. The principal suggested she donate the harder books to the library. Never saw one of them! Fortunately, she went on to "greener pastures" after just two years.
