I want to thank everyone (stopped counting at 80) who replied to tell me that Maya angelou has NEVER actually been named Poet Laureate of the United States. She was asked to recite her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at the first Clinton inaugeral. But, there are many many people out there with the same misconception I had. Do a phrase search on both her name and "poet laureate" and you can find many many sites, even some interview transcripts where she was introduced as "poet laureate of the U.S." I do agree with the sentiments of many of you that our country should be ashamed of not having recognized the work of this great lady in this manner. Thanks again to all who took the time to reply.
