My response was off the cuff, and somewhat unprofessional. It was also = meant for a single person, not the list, and I apologize. However, my opinion stands, and I still agree with Jeff that altering a = book is an abdication of one's professional duty as a librarian. As I see = it, a large part of my duty as a librarian is to broaden children's = experiences and help them to deal with the larger world through the = relatively safe medium of books. For the most part, I do not feel that = children benefit from having things hidden. Sooner or later they are = going to encounter nudity in some context or other and hopefully their = childhood experiences will give them the background they need to do so = with grace and even appreciation. Turning the human body into something = about which we have to be secretive and embarassed (as opposed to = matter-of-fact) is hardly beneficial, in my opinion. Furthermore, isn't it a copyright violation to alter the picture while = allowing it to pass as the artist's original? Debra, you have made a choice that works for you. So be it, but that is = never a path I could choose or even agree to.
