I tried to send this directly to Jan Boling, but it came back to me
twice.  I think you're referring to I Am the Cheese, which is about
that old, but the boy's name is Adam, I think.

Hi all,

The guidance counselor in our school asked if I'd heard of a
fiction=20 book about a boy having homosexual tendencies.  She
thinks
his name=20 might be Melvin, he talks in first person, and there's a
mental=20 institution involved.  She thinks the book may be older
than
20 years.

Anyone?  Anyone?
