I am in a 1-3 building and I have found marking the shelves and putting
things in baskets helps with all the questions.

Each non fiction shelf is marked with the subject of the books and some have
another marker - for example, the dinosaur books have a stuffed dino on top
of the shelf,

The easy book shelves are marked with big alphabet letters, and I've taught
the kids how to find the letter they need. If one asks for Frog and Toad, I
tell them Easy Section, L shelf, and off they go. The Arthur books are in a
box on the B shelf, and we have an Arthur Face cut out and taped to the
window above it. I've put the Clifford, Franklin the Turtle, and Jan Brett
books together, too, in boxes on the shelves.

I also have a holiday section - any book that mentions a holiday is on the
shelves here. All the Valentine's books are marked with holiday sticker from
Highsmith, and shelved together on a shelf marked Valentine's day.

Another LM_NETter talked about putting the popular fiction in baskets on the
shelves. I've done this too. All the American girls have their own baskets.
Pee Wee Scouts, Junie B, Horrible Harry, and Magic Tree House books do, too.

My kids are too young to use the catalog. I've found this really helps them.

Hope this helps you.
