I had many responses to my request for sources for good bibliographies
for secondary students. As you will see most of them were from people
searching for the same thing. I did get some ideas. Thanks for the
suggestions. If there are authors and publishers out there this looks
like a good market.

Only the mediocre man is always at his best-- Somerset Maugham

we're in the process of automating and I have the same problem! In fact,
I did weed the Michael Jackson book. We're an elementary school. It's a
tough task. I can't answer your question, but I feel your pain.
--------
>Please post a HIT. I'm having the same problems, and feel I could have
written your e-mail myself.
--------
I'm definitely interested. Too many bios are 48-64 pages or 480-640
pages!
Thanks!
I am interested in what to buy also, i just took over a high school
library
this year and the bio's are old and ugly.
---------
If you get anything good, please post a hit. I have a couple teachers
who still assign biographies. And most of what's out there doesn't meet
their criteria. (150 -200+) pages. I'm always searching for things that
look good.
---------
I have been struggling with this same biography issues
and would like to see the responses your receive. My
teachers require that their middle school biographyies
be between 170-200 pages which makes these even
trickier to find!
--------------
I would be very interested in seeing you post a hit on this topic. My
biography
section also rather sparse when it comes to books that the kids will
actually
read. A couple of things that I have bought over the last couple of years
that
the kids have check out is Hawk: Occupation Skateboarder, A Boy Named It,
Wake
up I'm Fat by Carmen Maheim (sp? from the Practice) I am always on the
lookout
for titles that aren't to long, or have too many pictures since some of
the
English teachers I work with have their students read biographies or
autobiographies.
---------------
I don't have a source, but here are some suggestions:

Any NASCAR driver
Greg Lemond (won the Tour de France, battled cancer)
Ask the kids which sports figures they'd like
Michael Jordan

In fact, it occurs to me that you could make a PR thing out of this for
the library - have students suggest some books to purchase, or take a
small group of them to a bookstore to choose some biographies.
-----------------
I am very interested in having you post a hit. I have been having the
same
problems. I have a teacher of sophomores who assigns a project where
students must read a biography of at least 100 pages- usually a
historical
figure. If you find out anything- let me know.
This series is quite good for high school.
