Several people asked for a hit on this topic. Here are the responses I =
received:

When you consider expanding the activities of one group in a high =
school I think you need to take a look at all the other clubs and groups =
and the activities they already do. With fund raising it is wise to =
look at all the other organziations who have fund raising activities. =
At my school when NHS expanded their activiites they started taking over =
some of the same activities that my Future Teachers of America group had =
been doing. It caused a lot of confusion and the school board of my =
district really came down on fund raising a couple years ago and =
required all fund raising activities to be approved in advance. On the =
fund raising I think if you are going to sell something that the school =
group should receive at least 50% of the sale proceeds and that it needs =
to be something useful and of value. =20

I have been a National Honor Society Advisor for 26 of my last 29 =
years working as a library media specialist. One of the most enjoyable =
and worthwhile projects that our chapter has undertaken in recent years =
has
been to invite senior citizens in the community to opening night of the =
school musical. Each NHS student is paired with a senior citizen. They =
have the option of inviting a grandparent or family friend. Students =
without such a relative or friend to invite will be matched with a group
of seniors in the community who want to attend the musical.
Seniors and students arrive early so there is good opportunity to =
mingle and converse together before the performance begins. During =
intermission, we serve refreshments to our guests in the cafeteria =
(cookies and punch all provided by NHS). We usually have the local =
newspaper come by to take a photo of everyone having a great time.
This project generates very positive feelings between school and =
community. The drama department also appreciates having a full house on =
opening night which is typically on Thursday and otherwise often a slow
night for the box office.
Other NHS projects? We sponsor group tutoring sessions and help out =
frequently at the local humane society (assisting at adopt-a-thons and =
organizing a "pet drive" at holiday time). We also volunteer at the food
bank and salvation army.

Our NHS acts as guides for 6th and 8th grade career day for presenters. =
And greeters at other events, such as Health Fairs. After the induction =
of new members, they have a catered dinner for the selection committee, =
parents, old members and their parents, Board of Ed.
and faculty/administration. Following that, there is the induction =
ceremony and a speaker.
In the past, they have gone on trips to Washington,DC or =
Toronto. They've conducted a Jeopardy type assembly with questions =
submitted by the faculty. And participated in a Quiz Bowl against other =
schools in the area.

For a fundraiser, we sell carnations at Valentine's Day, and at the end =
of the year we take all the kids who participated in our group community =
service project (food drive) and who completed an individual community
service project of their own to Wild Waves theme park for the day during =
the last week of school.

Our big fundraiser is a talent show. Community
members that are involved in the "industry" vote.=20
There are small prizes awarded. The NHS members
decide where to donate the rest of the money. Our
students greatly enjoy the talent show. =20

Our chapter does a community blood drive twice a year. Once in the Fall =
and once in the Spring. The students go to the senior citizen center =
close to Valentine's Day and play games and bingo and have desserts with =
them. The students sell M & M's with all proceeds going for =
scholarships for Seniors at the end of the year. The end of the year =
activity is being the workers at the Special Olympics games held at our =
high school football field. The "special" students get to play games, =
have their faces painted, eat (picnic) style with the students from our =
NHS chapter. Schools throughout our county are asked to participate in =
this day with us and they ALL have a great time.

I am a sponsor of our NHS and one of the things we do is sponsor a =
student faculty game. This is our only fund raiser and everyone looks =
forward to it each year. Also, we always go to Shakertown for =
breakfast and then either tour or we go on a boat ride down the KY =
river. In the past we have visited College or University Libraries then =
gone out to eat.

Thanks to all who responded.
