Roberta....I'm sure we have all been in similar situations...you don't want to
discourage teachers from using resources but on the other hand, you would like some
advance notice! Many years ago, I developed a planning guide for my teachers. A
copy of the guide is included in our faculty handbook and I also discuss its use at
our faculty meeting the day prior to the beginning of the school year. These would
be my suggestions to you:
Include on the form what is important to you! Revise the form as needed. Develop
one form that you and the teacher with whom you are working can fill out together -
this then becomes collaboration! Keep a copy and make a photocopy for the teacher.
That way you both have a copy for your files.

I would also determine the amount of lead time you need. My teachers understand
that we must borrow materials through interlibrary loan if we don't have the
materials in our media center. I also require that all Internet sites be checked
beforehand not only for content but also to ensure that the sites get through our
filter! It's surprising the sites that get blocked and there is nothing more
frustrating than to gather web sites that result in an "access denied by filter"
message!

Some possible components for the form: Teacher, class period, # of days for use of
media center, content area, goal, objectives, resources (both traditional and
electronic), activities, assessment, instructional responsibilities - teacher and
library media specialist, curricular standards addressed, state/national standards
addressed, culminating activity. I also have a follow up discussion after we have
completed the lesson with the teacher to determine what worked and what didn't work
so we can revise/edit the lesson for subsequent use.

I have teachers moan and groan about filling out the form but when I remind them
that we will do it together then it doesn't seem like such a burden.
I feel the planning form is a very positive tool for us to use. I have found it
eliminates those teachers who view the media center as a "back up lesson plan" for
those personal/sick days! My teachers also like the fact that not only am I sharing
my ideas with them when we develop the lesson but we share teaching
responsibilities. It's also the way to go for integrating information literacy
skills into the curriculum!

It's surprising how your image changes with both your students and your teachers!
You get to know your teachers and your teachers get to know you! Teachers now view
you as a vital element to planning and implementing their lessons while your
students view you as a teacher rather than..well..whatever they think we do all day!

I am a new librarian at a K-12 school and your information will be a great help to
start my school year! As a classroom teacher in the past I understand why
collaboration is needed so why moan and groan when it is time to fill out the form.
It will just help the teacher create as better unit! Thank you!
