Greetings Colleagues, I'm having a problem understanding something and I hope the collective wisdom of this group can help. It has to do with the future of teaching, teachers and LMS/Teacher-Librarians. Over the past few months there seems to have been a steady stream of messages from members who's budgets had been cut, time reduced or (worst case scenarios), positions eliminated. Here in British Columbia the situation is especially bleak. School libraries and Teacher Librarians have been hit hard as a result of government cut backs. Given present trends, the Teacher Librarians of this province may soon be as endangered as the spotted owl. Then I read an article in the May 6, 2002 edition of "Time Magazine" (The Coming Job Boom) which says, "School districts and universities will need 2.2 million more teachers over the next decade, not to mention administrators and librarians and are already avidly recruiting." Since when? Who is avidly recruiting? Where's the evidence? I've seen few signs of it. A quick look through the want adds of several Canadian and American newspapers shows no more then the usual number of vacancies and the web job sites have no dramatic increase in LMS/TL's positions. So, "Where's the beef?" Is this article merely hypothesis and supposition masquerading as fact or is there some actual validity to it? Are there district which are "avidly" recruiting LMS/TL's. Your assistance greatly appreciated. Thanks. -- John Goldsmith, Counsellor (and Ex-Teacher Librarian) Fraser Valley Distance Education School 49520 Prairie Central Road, Chilliwack, B.C.
