For anyone who tries to get into Safe Mode in Windows XP on a Gateway
computer to defragment the hard drive, please do not follow the directions
in the Help and Support. They do not work. Instead go to
Start-Run-msconfig and select Diagnostic Startup. Restart your machine and
this will take you into Safe Mode.
I learned this by calling Gateway support after their online directions
didn't work. One pleasant surprise is that it took only 40 minutes to
defrag a 40 GB hard drive instead of the usual 6 hours that it takes on my
old Windows 98 machine.
