About thirty years ago my mother completed her MLS at an un-accredited
college in our town. She had no idea that the ALA accreditation would be so
valuable to her. To compound the problem, New Jersey public school
librarians must have an education certification. Her undergrad degree was in
psychology.
With the BS in Psychology (can't work in a school) and the MLS without ALA
(can't work at a college or university) she was stuck taking a civil service
test and working in acquisitions in the county college near home.
What a shame, since her first love is children's literature.
