copyright

I have two questions:
1.  My daughter wants to send her poems to publishers
but is worried about copyright.  Frankly, we cannot
afford the copyrighting fee for each one.  Should we
worry if these are sent out?  Also, if a publishing
company wants a fee, is it legit?

2.  I've been lurking for about four months and this
is only my second posting.  I want to be sure about
the mail for the summer.  Do I use the no mail option
or the sign off option?
