Thanks to all. Happy headphone listening.

They have a $3.50 set that I bought for home at the Technology Conference and
my daughters (teens) used and abused. I was so impressed with the durability
that I ordered 140 for my middle school labs. We haven't used them a lot this
year yet, but I am hoping they will last. I showed them to my tech committee
and they thought they looked good. They are flexible to prevent breaking and
you can buy replacement foam pads by the 100s. The website is new and doesn't
have a lot of information about their products (these headphones are not
listed) but there is a phone # and an email address.
Good luck.

Please share your findings. We purchased the $10 Califone stereo headphones
with dual 1/8" and 1/4" audio plugs and volume control for $10 each from
Southeastern Audio Video in Fordland, MO. They are great people to deal with,
but we've only had our headphones for 3 months, so don't know how they'll
hold up under 7 classes a day in elem. school.

Headphone use is an issue that we are dealing with too because of the health
risks of transmitting
headlice and other nasties. We are tired of being abused by parents who are
constantly having to
treat their children's hair.

Therefore we are considering having each student purchase their own as part
of their book pack at
the beginning of the year. The care and replacement of them then becomes
their responsibility -
they might not be quite so anxious to wreck them!

Back in January, I bit the bullet and purchased 25 LabTec Model #825
headphones. We, too, had gone through MANY sets of the cheaper models.
Everyone is thrilled with the purchase. They are priced around $20, however,
I got an excellent deal from Mac Warehouse. They have a full ear muff, which
I had my doubts about, but they are far superior than the small, flimsy ones.
Good luck.

We use headphones by Califone and they have held up VERY well! We have used
them for almost 2 years and I've never had to replace any of them (we are
K-6). Usually, younger students are quite hard on headphones, especially
chewing on cords but these are very good headphones. They have a large plug
(needed for a listening center) that comes off to reveal a smaller plug for
computers. Also, students know if they don't take care of the equipment, they
lose the privilege of using it. Good luck!

We had a big problem with the headphones we used in our public library. We
bought a couple of headphones made by Caliphone (Califone?) from Demco, I
think, and they've held up beautifully. They were around $20.00 each.

I'm sure this isn't what you want to hear, but in our college lab it's BYOH
(Bring Your Own Headphones) -- people cite hygiene (good clean Americans
don't want to put something in their hair that's been in
someone else's hair) and almost everybody has some kind of portable
entertainmnet device. I keep a taped-together set & loan it out and it hasn't
walked off yet.
If you do hear of good options for security let me know ([pst a hit?) because
we've got Dragon Dictate installed in two computers (as well as some other
assistive technology options, since we work with lots of
folks with dyslexia & dysgraphia & other LD type issues) and the headphones
with mics are a different issue altogether.

We have two headphones with mics (in case two people come in at the same time
to use Dragon). Since the frustration factor in using Dragon Dictate has a
lot to do with the quality of the headphones, we got ones
that folks on a speech-to-text listserv recommended; don't remember the cost
but I think it was over ten and under 20 dollars (but possibly over 20). I'm
not in the lab or I could tell you at least the brand name.

Our computer teacher found some 'phones that have flexible headbands, I think
they are from Caliphone, but I'm not sure. She had the same problem as you
with durability, but these have withstood a school year with some very
abusive kids. If you email me at school after July 1 I will get the
information for you.
