I agree with the post below, and would also like to mention the fact that SLJ is one of the few journals that prints negative reviews, and these can be very valuable ammunition. Frequently teachers are sold on a book because its description in whatever catalogue they found suits their needs in terms of subject matter. They are not aware of its literary quality, factual accuracy, etc. Over the years I have used these negative reviews to avoid filling my collection with junk, and can then go on to providing that teacher with materials that meet both her needs and my standards for quality. The obvious problem with excerpted reviews is that the snippets are chosen by people who are trying to sell the book, and of course their focus would be on acentuating the positive and ignoring the negative.Anytime a review comes through a company instead of a professional publication/organization, therre is always the possibility of a heavily skewed perspective. I have been reviewing books for SLJ myself for about six years, and now that those reviews are up on Amazon and B&N, this I can say from experience. There is a lot more to be said on this subject.... --- Vicki Reutter <Vreutt@AOL.COM> wrote: > SLJ is our voice and probably the best of our > professional journals!
