Dear LM_NET Colleagues,

As library media professionals we are charged with the responsibility of
being fluent in our use of computer based technology. We NEED to know how
to routinely recognize problems related to use of the Internet, including
spam and viruses.

For that reason, I have put together some informational resources related
to how one might deal with spam, UCE (unsolicited commercial e-mail),
inappropriate e-mail, p*rn*graphic e-mail, etc.

Please see:
   http://dewey.chs.chico.k12.ca.us/wdev.html#Spams

These sources will tell you all you need to know about spams, fake and
real viruses, hoaxes, unsolicited e-mail-- and what to do about them!

I am thinking that we may, as a group, want to take action by contacting
our legislators. It might be worthwhile to try and organize a campaign to
get some government action. I am very disappointed that there seems to be
very little in place at the present time. What laws do exist are at the
state level. It seems to me that there ought to be a law against
p*rn*graphers sending their ugly mail to school addresses, at the very
least!

More to follow.

Glad to have you with us on LM_NET!
