Ann, I'd like to encourage you to ditch this plan for several reasons. Primary among them is a learning theory called Media Richness theory. This theory states that certain media have more potential for retention than others. In other words, if a student reads the book and sees the movie, they are more likely to remember the movie several months or years later. This can cause significant problems in cases such as Disney's Pocohontas where there are ethnic stereotypes and historical inaccuracies. Is that what we want the students to retain after our week long unit on Jamestown? Of course not! Consider using only a =scene= from the movie adaptation to minimize the impact on the student of the richer, but less academically desirable, film. It's quite possible to do the same lesson objective using a short clip rather than wasting an hour and a half or more of instructional time in what is really a reward showing rather than a lesson objective. If the kids really like the clip, they will rent the movie or borrow it from the public library or even the school library (why not?) We hope, however, that they will appreciate the literature that we have provided in much more depth in the classroom. Carol Simpson, Ed.D. Asst. I've searched the archives and many literature sites, but haven't found anything specific. I'd like to do a compare/contrast activity focusing not only on the characters/plot/setting, but also on any special effects or techniques the movie uses. Any ideas? TIA.
