This is most impressive that your students caught on to this. Nothing gets by these voracious readers! It has been confirmed that there was this error in the first edition of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The issue at hand is the victims of Voldemort's murderous spells are supposed to be revealed in the backwards order the curses were performed (that is, recent to oldest.) Careful readers know that the father was killed before the mother, yet the father came out of the wand before the mother. Thus the revision of the text.
