This is most impressive that your students caught on to this. Nothing gets
by these voracious readers!
It has been confirmed that there was this error in the first edition of
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The issue at hand is the victims of
Voldemort's murderous spells are supposed to be revealed in the backwards
order the curses were performed (that is, recent to oldest.) Careful
readers know that the father was killed before the mother, yet the father
came out of the wand before the mother. Thus the revision of the text.
It would be a great exercise for students to look over all the changes of
the text, for in the first edition of volume 4, the father is even talking
to Harry telling him to wait for his mother....
