Am coming back to this issue of students wanting to make their own music videos using the entire popular song as the basis for their video. In a dialog with a teacher, she came back with the Web site <myvtv.com> which runs music videos produced by students. In a quick perusal of the site I didn't see much about copyright, and the one video which seemed to be exactly the kind of thing our students were wanting to do was the one "Old Time Rock and Roll" from Los Alamos High School, Los Alamos, NM. Anyone know what the story is about this site's copyright compliance? I know that just because someone jumps off the roof, I don't have to as well, but I am interested in this as a potential example of the mixed messages students receive. Also, someone brought to my attention the article in the new "School Library Journal", p. 43 April 2002 by Carrie Russell where she discusses this issue. Great article and very helpful, particularly the phrase "fair use may be viewed as existing along a continuum." However, in her article she makes it clear the students are not using the entire popular song, but "a small portion" even though the amount is undefined. Sure is interesting.
