Emporia State University, The Kansas Regional Library Systems, KASL, and
the Kansas State Library is extending an invitation to Library Media
Specialists/Librarians to attend the Sixth Annual Summer Institute for
School Media Specialists.  Two hours of graduate credit can be taken for
$119 per credit hour at ESU.  Email to Betsy Losey <blosey@media-net.net>

Certificates will be given for contact credit hours for In-service credit

Registration deadline:  May 31
Dorm room per night $37 at the HPTC (Please specify night/s desired)
Personal or school checks accepted for registration and dorm room and
registration.  Purchase Orders from schools accepted also.  Class
registration and payment can be made the first day of the Institute.

Program:  Caring for the 21th Century Student:  Librarianship in a 9/11 World
Featured speaker is Lawrence Lyman, Professor and chair of the Early
Childhood/Elementary Teacher Education at ESU.  Dr. Lyman will talk about
"The shared mission of caring:  What do children need?

Dr. Dee Hansen.  "The Hardware in our Heads:  Brain Research and How We Learn"

Kevin Kneisley and drama students at Hutchinson HS.  Mimes dramatize the
dilemmas teenagers face as they struggle with the voices of their hearts,
minds and souls.

Panel discussion:  Internet filtering in school libraries

Panel discussion:  Teaching information skills with the Handy 5

Panel discussion:  "Respecting Cultural Differences"  Rabbi Lawrence Karol,
Imam Omar Hazim, Christian Kramer of the Yuzhi Nation and Christopher Renner

Eric Hansen:  Updates and information on the Kansas Library Card

Dr. Jackie Lakin:  Reading strategies and other options for librarians
