I want to thank all who took the time to write to answer the question if it
were ethical for me, as a public librarian, to start a "computer tutor"
service during the times I am not working.

Almost everyone replied that they did not think it unethical, likening it to
a teacher who gets paid to tutor in his/her spare time. A few did offer
suggestions about writing grants to provide the service in my library. But
that would not gain me the boost to my income that, due to a family
situation, I need at this time.

I did go and speak with my deputy director, who told me that he was glad I'd
asked, but was, at first, confused as to why I thought it an ethical dilemma.
When I explained that the library pays me to provide services fro free, he
said, "Yes, we do. During your working hours. You would be providing a
service we do not provide, and one which we do not choose to provide at this
time. We have librarians who sub at other libraries; they don't say, "Don't
pay me because my own library pays me."

So, it looks like my plan is a go. Thanks again for all the input.
