Dear LM-Netters, I received this email message from a friend of mine who teaches English in a high school. A book she assigned was challenged, a committee met and approved the book, and now the parent wants to know what the school will do about setting up an alternative assignment. Have any of you had similar experiences? If so, what advice would you offer my friend? Any alternative novel suggestions? She has to respond to the parent by THURSDAY! Below is the email that she sent me, it explains her situation. " A novel that I assigned was challenged by a parent. You may know it. It is called After the First Death by Robert Cormier. A committee met to review it,and they all agreed that it was fine to read, but the parent has now asked the superintendent to make a finding. She has asked us to find out the procedure or policies of other school districts on how they handle alternative reading assignment if a parent objects to the subject matter. So, I am asking you what your school's policy or procedure is for this, AND if this has happened lately? Is so, how did the teacher make sure that the student understood the content--did the student go to the library while the rest of the class discussed the novel or was an outside assignment, and the student stayed in class. Could you let me know ASAP. I need to respond to her inquiry by this THURSDAY! " Thanks In Advance! Pat :-) Pat W.
