Hi everyone.
I'm a middle school librarian with approx. 460 7th and 8th grade students. =
We have the Accelerated Reader program, with around 200 tests and 250 =
books to support most of those tests. Most books are from 4th-9th grade =
reading level. We do not have STAR reader or any other easy way to test =
our students' reading level. My teachers are not interested in implementin=
g this program. All 10 of our elementary schools are running AR to some =
degree, and most students indicate they are tired of it by 7th grade. =
Another consideration: our book budgets have been zeroed out for this =
coming school year, so there is no money to purchase more books, tests, or =
prizes.

My principal would like to see this program utilized this year. What I'm =
interested in hearing from other middle school librarians is if any of you =
implement the AR program just in your library without support of any =
classes. How do you run such a program (procedures, goals, prizes etc.), =
and how is it received by your students?

I've checked the Archives, but have only seen AR information where =
teachers and librarians work together. Although I've tried to be positive =
in presenting advantages of the program, our teachers perceive they are =
too overwhelmed by their curriculum, students are overwhelmed by extra-curr=
icular activities and homework, and students are burned out on the =
program.

Please email directly to me, and I'll post a hit if requested.

Thanks,
Susan Eberhardt
