Deb and others,

This topic is so taboo that I really don't think teachers and administrators
know just how serious this truly is.
I am on the Professional Standards Commission in Georgia. The PSC
reviews cases that involve various charges against teachers, for example
vulgar language used by teachers, having a relationship with the
student,....etc.
The PSC is reviewing more cases involving teachers, (especially males)
and students. The majority of the findings are given warnings or even
suspensions without pay, but there have been cases where the PSC has revoked
certificates. As you can see, it ends a promising teaching career in a
heartbeat.
The teachers really need to know that hugging a child, kissing them, and
giving gifts are NOT just being friendly. this type of action is very
dangerous to the one who has the license! I am not telling you not to care
for a child, for I am guilty of the hugging and warm fuzzes. What I am
saying is just good sense and good judgment.
These are different times we live in and lots of children need and crave
attention. Just be sure to smile a lot and for heaven's sake, don't allow
them to spend the night at your house!
