Thanks so much for all your books-on-tape suggestions and your kind wishes. I was
overwhelmed with the promptness and scope of the many responses. I have already
reserved some to try. You're a great group! The list follows.

SUGGESTIONS OF AUDIOBOOKS
~~Crazy in Alabama- Childress (a little racy but funny),
~~Any of Lilliam Jackson Brown's mysteries featuring Quilleren
~~The Mitford Series by Jan Karon is a wholesome series that you could listen to
the first few books on the trip and it will definately keep your attention!
~~Angela's Ashes and Tis by Frank McCourt
~~Handmaid's Tale- Atwood

~~Gary Sinese's reading of Of Mice and Men was wonderful, and I'm currently
listening to Michael' York's reading of Brave New World, I realized I'd missed
some of the classics, so I recently began borrowing the books on tape and have been
very happy with them.

~~Try Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plumb series. Very, very funny.
One for the Money
Two for the Dough
Three to get Deadly are the first three titles. They are a hoot.

~~Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series is great too, if you like historical fiction.
           Outlander
           Dragonfly in Amber
Voyager
Drums of Autumn
The Fiery Cross

~~Silverwing on tape is long and completely wonderful.
~~ 1) Anything in Lilian Jackson Braun's THE CAT WHO series
These are humorous, murder mysteries with numerous plot twists
  2) If you like spy thrillers,we have really enjoyed some of Daniel Silva's books.
Mark of the Assassin and the Kill Artist
  3) I also listend to Tom Brokaw's the "Greatest Generation Speaks" and it seemed
more powerful on tape.
 4) Another I found easy to get caught up in was Marion Dane Bauer's Early
Winter.

~~The Harry Potter audios are some of the best I have heard

~~The Watsons Go to Birmingham- 1963
~~Bud, Not Buddy
~~Cheaper by the Dozen

~~I read the book (and loved it) and I've heard that the tape for Seabiscuit is
fabulous!

~~My favorites this year have been the Harry Potters. The man who reads them does
a fantastic job- his voice is perfect

~~I have loved the Avi books on tape. I especially loved Bat 6, (can't get the
spelling right, but it is by Virginia Wolf Euer?). The voice for the tape
_Gathering Blue_by Lois Lowry made me love that book even more than _The Giver_
which I read but did not hear. And, listening to _The Fellowship of the Ring_and
_The Two Towers__has afforded me the opportunity to read a very important series of
books that I would NEVER attempt to read.

~~Two of the best, Books on Tape "The Southpaw" and "Bang the Drum Slowly" both by
Mark Harris and read by John Randolph Jones
~~I enjoy Books on Tape's reader David Case, especially reading English 19th
century novels, one of his best is George Eliot's "Adam Bede",
That is a nice long one too. If you go online to their website
http://www.booksontape.com you can search

~~I have long commutes and was never a fan of audios. I always considered myself a
purist when it comes to books. But once I listened to my first one (Cold Mountain
by Charles Frazier) I was absolutely hooked

~~Some of my favorites:
Any of the Thomas Hardy novels: Tess of the D'Urbervilles
   Jude the Obscure, etc.
Empire Falls by Richard Russo (this year's Pulitzer)
7 Habits of highly effective families by Steven Covey
    Tuesday's with Morrie
    Who moved by cheese?
    Bridget Jones' diary
    Anything by Jane Austen

~~Timeline / Michael Crichton

~~Have you read the Left Behind Series...real good on tape...I'm also listening to
"The Cat Who..." series. I have totally become hooked on books in the car!

~~Diana Gabaldon's Outlander is a wonderful romance/history title. I've listened
to it a couple of times

~~If you enjoy mysteries, any of Jonathan Kellerman's are great as are any of James
Patterson's. I've just finished his latest, The Beach House,
and I could hardly wait to do housework or my laundry so I could listen!

~~Any of the unabridged editions of Jan Koran's books about Mitford read by John
McDonough

~~I do this all the time. Any by Koontz--thrilling and keeps you wide awake.
Listen to his only in the day time.
Cronwell(?)'s Dr. Kay Scarpetta's forensic thrillers--forget the others.
Patterson's--Black Friday, and the ones with African American
detective--can't think of his name (Kiss the girls--etc).
James Lee Burke's Det. Robicheaux stories.
Maeve Benchley's are good but not thrilling.
Also, Mary Higgins Clark.
The Pilot's Wife and Sea Glass.
You may get hooked.

~~Cracker Barrel restaurants have a great selection of current titles. They charge
your credit card then credit you when you return it, which may be done at any of
the restaurants in their chain.

~~The Winner by David Baldacci
I listened to this on my flight from USA (Florida) to South Africa...long flight
and it kept my interest

~~Any of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum mysteries - funny, engaging, not at all
hard to follow.

~~All the Harry Potters are great. Right now I'm listening to Middlesex - not a
subject I would choose but decided to try it and it's great!!! Lots of tapes so
would last a long time. Also listened to The Loop and was surprised at how much I
enjoyed it. All the Dave Barry's are great also.

~~The Harry Potter tapes are great - even if you've read
the books. Patrick Stewart doing A Christmas Carol is
also good.

~~Try BUD, NOT BUDDY, read by James Avery, funny and a good story too!

~~of course, the Harry Potter books are my first choice

~~As for adult, I strongly recommend Steven King's works. They're compelling (read
by the author) and long. We listened to one, "Bag of Bones," which is a romantic
ghost story a few years back.

~~Christy by Catherine Marshall
