I would like to add my two cents to the discussion of fraternizing with
minors. We need to help student teachers as well as new teachers. This
group can really be a challenge, because they are still students themselves.
We had one handsome student teacher one year that several of us talked to
about being very careful to never close the door during a one on one with a
student (particularly a female), and to make sure he was always thinking
about how things "looked". He wasn't doing anything wrong, just was
oblivious to the thought of such things. Perhaps the colleges need to do a
better job of telling teachers what the reality is like, instead of the
ideal. We've had others that were more of the "I want to be your buddy"
type, too. But, of course, they were closer in age to the students than
they were to most of the faculty. It's a shame we all have to be so
careful, but it is no longer enough to KNOW that you are doing everything
above board. Now, if someone misinterprets, misrepresents, of just plain is
out to get someone, the teacher is in trouble. It really is a shame. A
reputation ruined is forever, even if the teacher is vindicated. Happy
