Last year we moved two rectangular tables out of the library and replaced
them with a loveseat, two semi-comfortable chairs (upholstered seats and
back, wooden arms), and a coffee table (cost=$500). Our circulation and use
went up. Students would come in during a break and just sit and read
(magazines and popular fiction are shelved next to the loveseat and
"Chicken Soup" type books are on the coffee table) or study. This year we
added two star-shaped hassocks from Target. The kids love the area. Do we
look like a bookstore? No...they still have to be reasonably quiet so as
not to disturb studying students, but it IS very inviting. If we had room
and money, I'd make another reading area or two.
