Yes, I did when I had K. When I finally got a couple of them to talk about it, I found that they were almost afraid to do so. They didn't want to forget them or have something happen to them. Sometimes it is a matter of an older sibling scaring the younger one about what happens to them if a book is damaged or lost. Then there were a couple who didn't understand exactly what was going on. They didn't realize that they could take the book home and read it and then bring it back. They thought they were buying the books and didn't have any money. Usually after a few weeks, however, they start checking books out. Although, one poor child who, as we later found out, had a really abusive home never took anything out. He never knew which house he was going to be in so was afraid he would forget the book. We convinced him he could keep the books at school and read them there. Just keep encouraging them. -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU]On Behalf Of rschulte Sent: Wednesday, October 02, 2002 10:23 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: Fwd: K not wanting to check out books Hi. Have any of you ever had a problem with Kindergartners not wanting to check out books? This is the first year I've experienced this. Every kind. class I have, it seems one or two students don't want to check out a book. I try to encourage them, but I won't force the issue. Does anyone out there have any ideas to encourage them to check out? Thanks again for your wonderful insight!
