You might try _The Number Devil_ by Hans Magnus Enzenberger. When I googled to get the author's name, I ran across a page with some good info about the book (http://math.cofc.edu/faculty/kasman/MATHFICT/mf20.html). Alex Kasman is a math prof. and has a whole Math Fiction section at: http://math.cofc.edu/faculty/kasman/MATHFICT/default.html Try Enzenberger, The number devil; Tahan, The man who counted. For easy nonfiction, if weak on the math: Golden Goblet by McGraw A Place in the Sun by Rubalcaba Secret of the Red Silk Pouch by Simon More seventh grade level might be: The Thief by Turner The Silver Branch by Sutcliff Song for a Dark Queen by Sutcliff Try "Mathematicians are People Too" in non-fiction. Sorry, I can't recall the author. This is fiction about math. A boy dreams about a number devil who visits him each night and gives him lessons in higher level mathematical thinking. The Number Devil It isn't history per se but it does refer to real mathematicians (sometimes with their names disguised).
