I always expect payment for the replacement of a lost book before another
book can be checked out. HOWEVER, I am amazed how often the book is found by
the student AFTER it has been paid for, so I added to the policy that money
will be returned if the book is found and returned within the semester by
the student (This means not returned by a bus driver, lunchroom attendant,
the public library, etc, etc.
On occasion our computer doesn't check a book in, in fact, it seems
sometimes the computer is daydreaming instead of doing it's task!! Just in
case that has happened, my students know that it is their responsibility to
check the shelves and IF they should find their book, I give them a
Hershey's kiss.
On the other hand, for the kids that are absolutely positive that a book
they have looked for isn't on the shelf (after looking it up on the online
catalog and seeing that it is in). I tell them they owe ME a Hershey's kiss
if I walk right to the shelve and find it! Although I never seem to get the
chocolate payment, it does seem to make them look a little harder before
asking my help. (Not that I'm that lazy, but I find there are quite a few
kids that don't want to put much effort into it themselves).
