One day several years ago when my daughter was a first grader, we put her
library book on the counter right by the back door so we'd remember to
take it to school that day. I remember that very clearly. To this day,
I can see the book sitting there.
The next thing I remember is an overdue notice from her school. I told
the assistant there, "Hmm, I could have sworn we returned that book!"
We searched the house high and low, no book. I was convinced we had
returned it! Where else could it have gone from the back counter but
out the door and down the road?
A few weeks later I forced myself to go to the far back closet where we
never went, the one in the back of the house beyond the utility room where
mold sometimes grew because we lived in such a rainy environment. What I
was looking for, I don't remember, but what I found was that library book.
