LM_NET Archive

This is in response to two recent threads on LM_NET -- a request for a =
(discount) bookseller on the web (besides Amazon) and numerous requests =
and suggestions relating to book clubs for kids.

I want to recommend Book Closeouts -- www.bookcloseouts.com -- as a =
source of inexpensive books. Funding the purchase of multiple copies of =
books for book clubs can be a problem -- so this kind of a vendor is =
perfect for that purpose. =20

However -- please note -- it's not a regular bookseller with a regular =
stock -- it's just a big ongoing sale -- you have to paw through and =
look for the bargains. You can do that online or you can have catalogs =
of sub-categories (e.g., Books - Children -- Pre-teen and Young Adult -- =
which has about 3,000 entries in it) sent to your e-mail address for =
offline perusal. They often have hardbacks for sale right before the =
paperback of the book is coming out. (For example, I assumed that's why =
LIRAEL: DAUGHTER OF THE CLAYR by Garth Nix (the sequel to SABRIEL) is =
available (hbk, $6.99).) =20

[By the way, if you use www.bookfinder.com on the Internet (which =
searches for new and used titles at once), it will cite Book Closeouts =
when they have a copy of what you're looking for.]

I just checked them today and these are some of the books on offer -- =
many of which I've used very successfully in upper elementary and middle =
school book clubs -- and many of them old favorites which they have bulk =
quantities of:

Perfect for upper elementary and middle school:
-- DAVE AT NIGHT -- Gail Carson Levine -- pbk -- $2.99
-- THE WISH -- Gail Carson Levine -- pbk -- $2.99 (re a 7th grade girl, =
as I recall)
-- HARRIS AND ME: A SUMMER REMEMBERED -- Gary Paulsen -- pbk -- $1.99
-- MRS. PIGGLE-WIGGLE -- (3 different titles available) -- Betty =
MacDonald -- $2.99
-- RUNNING OUT OF TIME -- Margaret Peterson Haddix -- pbk $1.99
-- AMONG THE HIDDEN -- Margaret Peterson Haddix -- pbk -- $1.99
-- THE CHOCOLATE TOUCH -- $1.49
-- THE TROLLS -- Polly Horvath -- $1.99
-- JULIE OF THE WOLVES -- $2.99
-- IN THE YEAR OF THE BOAR AND JACKIE ROBINSON -- $2.49
-- THE LAND I LOST -- Quang Nhuong Huynh -- $2.49 -- tales of his =
boyhood in the mountains of Vietnam

Perfect for middle school and higher:
-- ENDER'S GAME -- Orson Scott Card -- pbk -- $2.99
-- WHIRLIGIG -- Paul Fleischman -- $1.69
-- SO YOU WANT TO BE A WIZARD -- Diane Duane - pbk - $1.99
-- OWL IN LOVE -- Patrice Kindl -- pbk -- $1.99
-- THE GOATS -- Brock Cole -- pbk -- $1.99
-- ENCHANTRESS FROM THE STARS -- Sylvia Engdahl -- pbk -- $1.99 (if you =
didn't follow the ccbc-net discussion of her work, you should go to the =
archives and check it out -- an amazing book -- probably more for 14+)
-- Megan Whalen Turner's books -- THE THIEF -- pbk -- $1.99 -- plus its =
sequel THE QUEEN OF ATTOLIA -- pbk $2.99. See also her INSTEAD OF THREE =
WISHES: MAGICAL SHORT STORIES -- pbk -- $1.99
-- THE HOMECOMING -- Cynthia Voight -- pbk -- $1.99
-- CATHERINE CALLED BIRDY -- pbk -- $2.99
-- FREAK THE MIGHTY -- Rodman Philbrick -- pbk -- $2.49
-- MARIANNE DREAMS -- Catherine Storr -- pbk -- $1.99 (a British modern =
"classic" of sorts)
-- THE AMAZING MAURICE AND HIS EDUCATED RODENTS -- Terry Pratchett -- =
hbk -- $5.49 -- This is a hardback bargain you shouldn't pass up -- this =
year's winner of the British Carnegie medal -- hilarious Discworld =
take-off on the Pied Piper tale -- I can only assume it's here because =
it's being issued in paperback. I highly recommend it (and I look =
forward to doing it with a book club of middle school students....)
-- EVA -- Peter Dickinson -- pbk -- $1.99 -- Another amazing British =
book -- about a girl whose "brain" is grafted into a chimpanzee's body =
after she was in a terrible accident -- so she wakes up as a chimpanzee =
with her own brain and thoughts.

Check out the books listed for the following authors: Avi, Sharon =
Creech, Will Hobbs, Joan Bauer, Katherine Paterson, Frances Temple =
(e.g., THE BEDOUINS' GAZELLE, THE RAMSAY SCALLOP, GRAB HANDS AND RUN, =
and TASTE OF SALT), Lloyd Alexander, Paul Zindel, William Sleator, =
Beverly Cleary.

Especially check out all the reasonably priced Diana Wynne-Jones books. =
Some hardbacks for $5.99 and paperbacks ranging from $1.99 to $3.49.
