<color><param>0100,0100,0100</param>So many times I see requests here for fiction
titles appropriate to specific
periods in history.... I would like to recommend two professional titles I use
to identify appropriate historical fiction all the time:

<underline>An Annotated Bibliography of Historical Fiction for the Social Studies,
Grades 5 Through 12</underline>, by Fran Silverblank. Dubuque, Iowa: Kendall/Hunt
Publishing Company, c. 1992 by the National Council for the Social
Studies. ISBN 0-8403-7516-6. 106p. softcover. 14.95.

                Settling America and Colonial Times

American Revolution and the New Nation 1774-1779

The Nation Expands and is Torn Apart by War, 1800-1860

                Civil War and Reconstruction, 1861-1865

The Transformation of a Nation, 1866-1899

World War I and the Great Depression, 1900-1939

        WORLD HISTORY

                Prehistoric Times

                B.C.-A.D. 650

                651-1066

                1067-1499

                1500-1699

                1700-1799

                1800-1899

                1900-1945

                1946-1990

Sample entry:

        Staples, Suzanne Fisher

        Shabanu: Daughter of the Wind

        [Pakistan]

        Knopf 1989

        Grades 7-12

A 12-year-old girl, the younger daughter in a family of camel
herders who live in the Cholistan Desert, must face an arranged marriage to
a wealthy older man with three wives.

Another book I refer to often is:

<underline>World Historical Fiction Guide for Young Adults</underline>, by
Lee Gordon and
Cheryl Tanaka. Ft. Atkinson, WI: Highsmith Press. c1995, ISBN 0-917846-
41-9. 301p. hardcover, $30.00

This one is broken down by continents, then regions, then countries.
For example:

        AFRICA

Prehistoric Africa (prior to 6500 B.C.)

                North of the Sahara

                        Egypt

                        Ethiopia

                        North Africa

                South of the Sahara

                        Burundi

                        Cameroon

                        East Africa

                        Liberia

                        Namibia

                        Nigeria

                        Sierra Leone

                        South Africa

This book also has separate title, author, subject, and chronological

indexes. Sample entry:

        PAKISTAN

Staples, Suzanne Fisher. Shabanu: Daughter of the Wind.

If you need to create a list of historical fiction, I think you will find these
titles invaluable!
