Thanks for all your help. Here's the HIT so far... (1) Some classic titles include _I, Robot_ and _The Rest of the Robots_, by Isaac Asimov; _R is for Rocket_, _S is for Space_, and _The Martian Chronicles_, by Ray Bradbury. O'Henry's short stories "Leiningen vs. the Ants" "To Build a Fire" _Cat Stories_, by James Heriott Robert Arthur's _Mysteries, Mysteries, Mysteries_, _Ghosts, Ghosts, Ghosts_, and others whose names I've forgotten. One of the teachers with whom I worked used "Leiningen vs. the Ants" and "To Build a Fire". Depending on your teacher's tolerance for satire, Edward Lear's stories are great fun -- e.g., "The Unicorn in the Garden". (2) Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" Ray Bradbury's "All Summer in a Day", "The Veldt" ??'s "The Lady or the Tiger" because the kids learn about Civil War: "Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" (Ambrose Bierce) "Mosquito" (cute!) sometimes: Rapaccini's Daughter Jack London's "To Build a Fire" I'll add more as they come in.
