Sybil Fineman posted this link - do read it, excellent info. http://www.bookmagazine.com/issue24/literacy.shtml It specifically mentions students not having a depth of reading. One thing I notice as I WEED out books from the 60's & 70's is that the DEPTH is there in the older nonfiction books; many of today's books are decidedly different in format. While I do like the colorful pictures, etc., of the newer books, the amount of data presented is usually SUBSTANTIALLY less. Today's elementary students may be reading the same *number* of books, but they are often not reading (or at least aren't exposed to)the same amount of words and depth of data that students in the 50's/60's/70's were. This is one *beef* I have about book series created for (at least, it seems they may be created for the tests, not the other way around!) some electronic reading management programs - they seem to be *light* on depth of information. After all, there are only ten questions asked, right? Just an observation. . . Joanne Ladewig, Library Aide (A.K.A. "Library Lady") Lawrence Elementary, G.G.U.S.D.
