I think one compromise is to use stickers on the books--especially fiction. I had my clerks do it the first year I was at this library. They would bring a shelf of fiction to the check out desk and look at the blurbs, subject headings on the verso, etc. The ones they weren't sure of they saved out for me to look at (we weeded at the same time). It's not perfect, but it is ridiculous to expect anyone to look in the catalog for genre books. I probably have more than 500 books in any of the larger categories like mysteries. How can looking that up in a catalog help anyone? I also use stickers judiciously in non-fiction to help indicate Montana books, Native Americans, biographies not in 921, etc. If you don't have a clerk, it is an interesting job for volunteers or even students.
