Robert wrote: My beef with online/internet classes is they are too EXPENSIVE !!! 1000.00 for a class????? and....how do some people get a degree online at 1000.00 a class???? Yes, there are some fairly expensive online courses but NOT EVERY course costs $1000 or more. A case in point is the University of Northern Iowa. Tuition is $280 per graduate credit hour. That is the same fee for in-state and out-of-state students. A 3 credit course costs $840 and a 2 credit course is $560. The UNI program is geared to teachers and librarians and has had many, many satisfied participants in the time it has been available. The courses and staff are all top notch and you really get your money's worth. I agree with your basic premise: college tuition is not "cheap". The state universities here in NJ just raised tuition and fees because they were not getting sufficient aid from the state. Out of state students at other schools like the University of Delaware will pay $6,500 more a semester this year. Those at private universities such as New York University and the University of Pennsylvania also saw increases of over $10,000. Make no mistake about it, education is an investment today. I don't know what the answer is. I do know that college enrollment doesn't seem to be dropping dramatically as these increases are posted. That must mean that the students and their parents feel that it is necessary to pay those exorbitant rates for something that will guarantee them a chance at successful careers and better lifestyles. There is an online report about the actual increases in tuition in relation to the Consumer Price Index. It states that since the 1980s, college prices have been rising steadily, at two to three times the Consumer Price Index (CPI). http://oipr.depaul.edu/scripts/sir/pricing/2001/report.asp This should come as no surprise to those of us who have college aged kids or recent college grads in the family.
