For starters, I would include the following lists of books for grades 5-8 in
my purchase:

*Newbery Award Winning Titles (past and present)
*Your state's Award-Winning Titles and nominees-- for New Jersey
(Garden State Award Nominees for Grades 6-8)
 *Outstanding Science Books for 2003
*Coretta Scott King Award Winning Titles
*Notable Social Studies and Trade Books for 2003
*Top Shelf Fiction for Middle School Students

The lists are available through Follett's Titlewave program:
http://www.titlewave.com/login/

You will need to create a login name and password and then when you come to
the first page after you've logged in, scroll down to the area that says
"Book Sets, Series, etc." and click "go" you can then choose "award
winning titles" "state titles" and more.

You don't have to order from Follett to get the lists (but I do anyway
because I have great luck with their products)--- so even if you choose to
go through another service, you'll have titles to choose with some pretty
accurate prices. It doesn't take long to spend the budget!

Good luck!
