Judy,

I've worked with students like yours. Although I was initially "against"
the idea of restricting books because it was not what librarians are
supposed to do, I began to realize that the "culture" of the disabled
student sometimes involves specific behaviors that must be modified.

Often when we restricted materials based upon the negative behavior of the
student, we got the results that the teacher wanted (in this case, doing
school work). As a reward, my students would be allowed to visit the
library and get materials again, BUT return them within a certain time
frame--often very short periods such as just an hour or overnight.
However, some of my students were very restricted because they became
obsessed with certain items (I had one book that had a key with it and my
special ed students fought for the book because of the key...I bought a
package of gold, plastic keys at a hobby store just to replace what they
took / lost.)

I know it sounds rough....difficult and harsh...but if you talk with the
teachers, check the student's IEP for information to help you better
understand the child's conditions, and then show that you're willing to be a
team-player, you will find that it IS in the best interest of the child.

Just an opinion.
